These are great for putting them into your computer bag or backpack because you know that they won't spill and ruin the gear in your bag. The splash proof are designed to be carried in the upright position because their main function is to keep the liquid from splashing when jostled around. Both the splash proof and the spill proof are insulated to help to keep the contents hot or cold. Which type that you choose, boils down to how you are going to use them, carried around in your hand or stowed in your bag.

After determining which type of travel mug that I wanted to use, which was spill proof, I checked online at one of my favorite gear shops, REI. I decide to get the flip top version of the spill proof mug instead of the screw on top version because of the convenience of the flip top always being connected to the mug, nothing to loose or keep track of. The top flip opens and locks back to prevent it from smacking you in the face while drinking, a really nice feature. The gray button is the stopper, up for closed and down for open, simple! The beverage flows slowly and smoothly into the food grade sipping collar, no spilling on your shirt and tie here. My coffee stays warm for hours thanks to the double walled design and thermal seal on the stopper. Clean up is a breeze, unscrew the top, unscrew the stopper and rinse with hot water. I chose to get two, one for cold and one for coffee. They are available in natural stainless, navy blue, forest green and steel gray. Pick up one of these travel mugs and you won't be sorry!

Chas

Everyone is Broken...

Hope that you enjoy "Broken"

Lyrics | Evanescence lyrics - Broken lyrics

Everyone is broken...I heard someone on TV say that and I thought, how true. We have all suffered from a broken heart which for most of us first happened in grade school. We have all broken our promises from time to time and we have all broken the law by using our mobile phones while driving. So being broken is as much a part of our lives as being honest. But, like being honest, being broken can be a positive thing. Broken eggs are required for making a delicious omelet or a birthday cake for a great celebration. "Break in case of an Emergency" signs require us to break the glass in order to sound an alarm that can save lives. Breaking bad habits can help us to achieve our goals which is always a positive thing. So destruction can be a good thing!

So the next time that you have a yummy chocolate bar, break off a piece and share it with a friend...

Chas

Headphone Review, Koss PortaPro Folding Headphones

The other day, I decided to buy some new headphones to use with my iTouch, iPhone and laptop. I wanted to buy some high end headphones that either go over the ear or on the ear because my "new bionic ear" is very sensitive in both sound and touch so in the ear type won't work for me. I researched online on CNET.com and the one that jumped out at me was the Koss PortaPro folding headphones. I went to Bestbuy and purchased the Koss headphones for $49 plus tax. These headphones are very retro '80s style, as a matter of fact the design is 23 years old. They are super comfortable and don't make your ears overheat like the over the ear type do. The open air type is also great for using in urban environments because you can hear what is going on around you. The cord is wrapped in cloth for durability and they come with the plug adaptor for the old style large plugs. All of that doesn't mean much if the headphones don't perform and these perform flawlessly! The sound quality is phenomenal! Great treble and super bass. I heard things in my music library that I have never heard before. Granted, some of that has to do with my bionic ear, but most of it has to do with the range that these headphones cover. Give them a try and let me know what you think.

Chas

Best Buy's Trade In Program (Dealtree.com) ***BEWARE*** ***UPDATE***

*UPDATE*
As a result of this blog post, Best Buy, the parent company of Dealtree.com , contacted me to apologize for the experience that I had with their trade-in program and refunded the shipping charges. I greatly appreciate the integrity that was shown when they admitted that they had made a mistake and did their best to rectify it.

*ORIGINAL POST*
Back in January I decided that it was time to recycle some of my portable electronics, a couple of Nintendo DS Lite's, a Nintendo GBA SP and an iPod 30Gb Video. I figured that now would be a good time before their value drops to nothing. So I contacted Best Buy's Trade-in program online and input the information to determine what the value of each item would be. The NDS Lite value was $64 each, the iPod Video was $49 and the NGBA SP was $12. So the grand total would be $190 dollars for items that I was no longer using. The deal is that if I ask for a Best Buy gift card I would get more money than if I asked for a check, so I figured that $190 dollars at Best Buy is better than $120 dollars cash (the amount that the check would be).

I decided to move forward with the trade in and accepted the amount that Best Buy would give me. Best Buy emailed me a shipping label for each item. I packed up each item, attached the label and sent them off to BB in SoCal (Irvine) on January 18th. Within a couple of days, the UPS tracking said that they received the packages and Dealtree.com (who contracts with Best Buy) would inspect the items within 7 days and send me an email confirming their value.

On January 26th, I received emails from Dealtree.com verifying the values of each item. The iPod was verified at $49, the NGBA SP was verified at $13 (they added a dollar for more than 3 games) and one of the NDS Lite verified at $57 ($7 less because of a missing cover, okay). Now comes the shady part, the other NDS Lite was verified at $0 because it was not working, "would not read games". I know for a fact that it was working as my 6 and 10 year old niece played with them as we were packing them up to ship out. I get an email stating that the trade in value is $0 and if I don't respond within 72 hours then the amount would be accepted and the item would be recycled. If I wanted the item returned to me, it would cost me shipping both ways ($19.30). I asked them to test it again and I got a canned response of "we test the units several times before we make a determination".

I decided to pay the ransom and have the NDS sent back to me. I got the NDS back on February 2nd. I happened to be going over to see my 10 year old nephew that evening, so I took the NDS over, handed it to him and asked him to play a game in it. He grabbed one of his games, put it in and started to play. I said, does it work, he said yeah why? I told him that this is one of the NDS's that we sent in to get money for it and they said that it didn't work. He said, what a bunch of liar's, I said "exactly".

On February 8th I receive the Best Buy gift card in the mail for $119. The name on the mail was not mine but the address was correct along with the gift card value so I figured no big deal. Gift cards don't have names associated with them, right? I mean if I give someone a Best Buy gift card they don't have to show ID to spend it, right?

Today, I get an email stating,
"Do to an unknown error with the original issuance of your gift card you may have received, or will possibly be receiving a gift card with an incorrect name associated with your address. In the past year, my life has changed in more ways than I thought were possible. In my business and personal life equally. Keeping up with the change has been a full time job and with any job, some days are better than others. On Wednesday, change once again is coming. I have known about this big change for a couple of months now, but preparing for the unknown result doesn't make it any easier or less stressful. This is a classic story about how the machines try to take over and destroy their creators. Unfortunately, this movie has a terrible ending and made too many assumptions to make it worth seeing. I am a fan of all things Tim Burton, but this movie doesn't deserve to have his name associated with it. Leave it on the shelf.

Chas

Rock Band on The iPhone

Rock Band on the iPhone is a very fun app. Whether playing solo or playing via Bluetooth/WiFi with three other iPhone or iTouch users it is truely a blast. There are a couple of short comings. One being the number of songs and the second being no singing vocals. There should be twice as many song to start (it comes with 20). Pairs of songs can be purchased for .99 cents but the selection is sparse. The no singing vocals is a true let down. You get a scrolling vocal track that you have to push the corresponding button for each song chorus, sideways?? Not sure what EA was thinking, the built in mic would make singing the vocals a snap. Oh well, it is still worth the $4.99 that I paid for it. He thanked many people from both sides of the isle for working with him to pass legislation for a better California, better?!?! He spoke of putting more money into education and less money into corrections. His plan to reduce the amount of money spent on corrections is to privatize it's operation. If he really wanted to make a difference for the future generations of Californian's, then he should have proposed the privatization plan 7 years ago. At this point in his tenure, it is too little and way too late. It was a well written speech and it's an obvious attempt was to gain approval points by showing humility and compassion because his next gig in politics depends upon it. I urge all Californian's to contemplate this, are we better off now than we were when he became the Governor?? His election platform was "no politics", let see which way his career takes him.

Chas

April 15th, Tax Day!

Today is April 15th, the day that everyone knows as the last day to file your income tax forms. My accountant prepared my taxes a week ago, but because it is April 15th, I got to thinking about the people who purposely DON'T file their taxes because they owe money. I did some research and found out that people who are delinquent on their taxes, settle, on average, with the tax board for 30% of what they owe! And if they owe more than $100,000, the percentage drops to below 20%! Where as, those of us who are law abiding, follow the rules kind of people, pay 100% of what we owe. How fair is that? What if everyone that owes, settled for 30 cents on the dollar?? This is another example of how the law abiding majority pays for the law breaking minority.

Chas

Tent City and it's Future in Sacramento

For those of you that work and live in the Sacramento area, you are well aware of the number one issue that the city is having to deal with, the Tent City that the homeless in our area have created. Mayor Johnson has gone on record, regarding the Tent City issue, saying that he does not want for people to live in a "third world" environment and that a "Tent City" will ruin the reputation of Sacramento and possibly attract more homeless to come to Sacramento and live in a Tent City.

Sacramento's homeless population should not have to live in a third world environment and the sanitation issue at Tent City can be solved quite easily. Portable toilets and washing stations are and have been available for some time and are used quite effectively for temporary sanitation solutions at events and in times of emergency. I am sure that one of our local sanitation suppliers would be willing to donate their equipment and services providing that they get a tax write off for their effort. People, including myself, are donating to the people, "down on their luck", of Tent City, food, water, clothing, shelter and whatever else we can spare. Being that location of the homeless is known and they are not scattered throughout the city, it makes it easy to give, and giving to the less fortunate has it's own rewards on a personal level.

Yes, Mayor Johnson, we may have a Tent City and hundreds of homeless occupying it, but how one treats it's poor and less fortunate is a true measure of a civilized society. If done right, OUR Tent City can be a model for the country and the world to follow. And if our compassion helps to improve Sacramento's reputation, so be it, but that byproduct is only incidental to the greater good of helping our fellow mankind.

Mayor Johnson, do the compassionate thing and support the current Tent City. Put all of the other issues (ie entertainment, sports teams, etc) on the back burners or better yet off the stove until the MOST important things, Sacramento's citizen's issues, homeless or not, are resolved.

Chas. Besides the fact that most people don't know what the poverty level is and would be unable to calculate 200% of that number, all this does is to burdon one segment of the population for another. The bill increases the current 39% federal tax on a pack of cigarettes to 100%. For other tobacco products, such as cigars, it puts a 53% tax on each cigar with a maximum of $3. The funny thing about taxing tobacco is that if everyone quit today, where would the money come from? As many of you may know, Obama is a cigarette smoker. He kept it hidden during the campaign for fear of alienating voters. Don't get me wrong, I like Obama and voted for him, but be a man and fess up to your vices.

Chas

Emoji on iPhones outside of Japan

Greetings,
Yesterday while listening to one of my favorite podcasts, Macbreak Weekly hosted by Leo LaPorte, one of Leo's guests, Justine Ezarik from the blog "Tasty Blog Snack" had a great tip regarding enabling emoji on iPhones outside of Japan. For those of you who don't know what emoji is, it is little pictographs (icons) used in Japan as keyboard shortcuts to communicate quickly in text messages and emails. Check out Justine's blog to get complete instructions for enabling emoji. I tried to get one the Friday that they were released, but 2 AT&T and 1 Apple Store lines that I stood in ran out. So I decided to wait a couple of weeks and try again. I still had to stand in line at the Apple store, but after an hour, I got one. The activation took a few seconds and I was out the door. I also bought a case and Mobile Me (I will post a review a Mobile Me at another time).

The first thing that I noticed as I started navigating around the iPhone is that it is more than just a phone. The email works great, the apps are very useful, the GPS adds great features to many apps and the internet browsing is simple and fast. It uses the fastest connection that it can find depending upon what is available at your location. Edge is the slowest, 3G is the midrange (when you can reliably connect to it) and WiFi is the fastest.

I setup fetch email for my current address and setup push email for my new Mobile Me address. The email works fine in both fetch and push and allows me to reply to messages instantly. Is it as good as a Blackberry? Yes and no, It gets your messages just as quickly as the Blackberry thanks to Mobile Me push and Microsoft exchange server compatibility. The iPhone has built in viewers for MS Word and Excel and for Adobe Acrobat as well as picture viewers and movie/audio players. The Blackberry has the advantage of having a physical keyboard which makes thumb typing a breeze for most people. After 6 weeks of practice with the virtual keyboard, I have gotten very proficient with it, but that is a pretty long learning curve for a simple item like a keyboard.

The 3rd party apps are a great addition to the iPhone. Depending upon your interests, you can personalize your phone to make doing your daily tasks faster and simpler. There are blogging apps, ebay apps, games, etc. Currently there are approximately 3000 apps available on the iTunes store.

There have been 2 updates to the iPhone since I got it. Both were for "Bug Fixes". The phone is snappier since the updates.

So is the iPhone the best thing since sliced bread (and what was the best thing before slice bread?)? No, the battery life is horrendous. If you charge it all night and try to get through the day without plugging it in, it will die on you...and thats if you only use it for phone calls. If you check emails and browse the web and play movies or music and use a few apps, your iPhone will be dead in a couple of hours. So you have to plug it in in the car, at the office and when you get back home. The way to get better battery life is to turn off the GPS and the Wifi and the 3G and the push email and the iPhone (just kidding bout the last one). So all of the great features that your iPhone can do are useless for an ultra mobile person. Even the great Steve Jobs can't change the basic law of nature..."the light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long".

I like the phone and am happy with it.

Chas

Win XP SP3 Released

The final update to XP was released recently, Service Pack 3. She said that he had been gone for one day and she didn't get much sleep because she was worried about him.
Anyway, I got to thinking about all of the flyers, and craig list ads that people put up when they have lost their animals. On craigs list, people offer reward money up to $2000 to get their lost animal back! People go missing everyday, all the time yet you don't see as many fliers or craig list ads for people as you do for animals? And you will never see a reward offered for a missing person. Which are more important, humans or animals ? Of coarse, everyone will answer, humans are! But we spend soo much money and time on the care and feeding and recovery of our animals that it would make one think...

Chas

Tractor Tip: Stabilizer Bars Dragging??

For those of you who use stabilizer bars with your 3 point, one of the nagging little problems arises when you drop an implement and have to maneuver and back up to another implement is that the dragging stabilizer bars dig into the ground when you back up. This rake is 3pt, PTO driven, not ground driven like all of the other rakes available from the other manufacturers. This is one of the largest implements that Harry Ferguson made for his tractors. It weighs in at approximately 1000lbs and the tractor is required to have front wheel weight in order to lift the rake and still be able to steer properly. The DEO 20, 7 foot model was way more popular than the larger 9 foot model. I purchased this rake from the family of a retired farmer in Livermore California. I pulled it out of the weeds 8 months ago and now it is good as new and field ready to work for another 5o+ years.

The curious thing about this particular rake is that it was made by Massey-Harris Ferguson in Canada. Previous DEO's were made in Detroit and the manufacturers metal plate states the name of the company as Harry Ferguson Inc. Detroit Michigan. After 5 years of producing the TO tractors in Detroit, Harry decided to quit producing tractors in the USA and wanted to find someone to produce his tractors. He met with Massey of the Massey-Harris tractor company in Canada and Massey agreed to buy the Ferguson company for 16 million dollars in 1953. As a result, the new company named Massey-Harris Ferguson was born. All of the tractor and implement manufacturing moved from Detroit to Toronto. In 1955 the company changed it's name to Massey-Ferguson as Harris had left the company before Massey bought Ferguson. The Massey-Ferguson company still exists today and is owned by Agco. The Massey-Harris Ferguson company only existed for 2 years before the name change in 1955. This rake was gray as all of the rakes from Harry Ferguson and Massey-Harris Ferguson were. The rakes produced from 1955 on were all Massey-Ferguson red.

Chas

Glass half full or half empty...

In today's economy, it is hard to believe that someone (besides the big bad oil companies) is honestly profiting from high costs. Today's farmers are seeing record prices for their crops because of a global demand that hasn't been seen in 40 years. As fuel prices increase 25% from a year ago, crop selling prices have increased 100%! Last year, corn was selling for $3 a bushel and this year it is selling for $6. So when all is added and subtracted, the net profit for farmers this year is 40% higher than last year. I don't know about you, but my salary hasn't increased 40% this year. Now might be a good time to get into farming if you have the knowledge and a few hundred acres laying around. As you can see my one of my previous posts, I have a tractor so I am ahead of the curve!

Chas

Indiana Jones and the Kindom of the Crystal Skull

Over the long Memorial Day weekend I had a chance to see the new Indiana Jones movie, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I have been a big Indy fan from the first time that I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. The new movie was a good, entertaining movie from start to finish. It was a movie that Lucas should have made about 10 or 12 years ago because Harrison Ford would have had an easier time making it in his 50's rather than in his 60's. Indy has lost a step or two and his whip cracking has slowed but it wasn't distracting, it was what you would expect from a 60 something year old. The movie was less about the search for the crystal skull artifact and more about the past relationship with Marion and his new relationship with Mutt (Shia LaBeouf). A must see for any Indy fan. Hopefully the movie franchise will continue with the next generation of Jones boys.

Chas

Oil execs do the "Potomac two step" again.

Yesterday Congress called the executives from the large oil companies to once again answer questions on the rising price of petroleum based fuel. And once again the execs tried to spin the focus on "aren't you mister big oil man concerned with your fellow Americans increasing burden of spending more and more of their monthly budget on gas" to "if you let us drill more in the US, then there would be more oil available on the market to lower prices". Then they were asked if they could lower their profits of an average of 600 billion and they reply that they have to answer to their share holders.
One of the main reasons for the expedited rise in Diesel fuel price is that we are EXPORTING diesel to countries like China and India because they pay more for it than we do in America. Shouldn't we be first in line for the fuel? Any surplus can be exported at a higher rate. We are giving this great country away, bit by bit.
Another puzzling thing is the oil reserve. We have been pumping oil into it for decades, yet it never fills up? Who is at the other end draining it out. How big can the storage tanks be? Is this just a shell game? How stupid do they think that we are??

Chas

Would you like some skin with your coffee??

Coffee shops have been one of the biggest growth markets for the past 10 years. We all know that Starbucks is the biggest player. They put up coffee shops on every corner, in every strip mall and right next to the small independent shop trying to squeeze them out of existence. So in order for the little guy to thrive, they have to have either great coffee or a unique atmosphere. Up here in Northern California, there was a coffee shop doing business as "Hot Coffee". All of the baristas wear bikinis as a way of getting customers (mostly male) to frequent their establishment. Unfortunately, Hot Coffee has closed it's doors because quite frankly, they didn't have good coffee to go with their steamy decorations. I just saw on the net, that a town in Washington state has 2 independent drive up coffee houses that are trying the skin and coffee approach. One of them has baristas in bikinis while the other has baristas with pasties! The small town is trying to shut them down. I am sure that they will fade away in time because the novelty with wear off. Those of you whom have read my blogs know that I talk about everything and Cigars. During this past winter, I decided that I needed to get a tractor to help me work my hobby farm. So after doing some research, I decided to go back in time and get a vintage tractor to restore and USE. I bought a 1952 Ferguson TO-30. It was in good running condition. All original and not "farmerized". I went through it, took it apart, painted it and got it into field ready condition with everything working as it should. It was a fun project and I learned a lot along the way. The main site that I used for reference, parts and great advice was yesterdays tractor co. This is one great site with some very helpful people. No matter how many times that I lit it (5 times within an inch) it would not stay lit. It tunneled like a gopher going for a radish. After 20 minutes of relighting and hyperventilating, I threw it at the goat and she wouldn’t even chew it! Perhaps I got a bad one. I had high hopes for this long named AyE. If I could find one, I would give it another try, very frustrating.

Chas

Smok’em if you Got’em

Torano Noventa La Esperanza

This evening I had the opportunity to smoke the Torano Noventa (90). Of the 3 sizes available, I am smoking La Esperanza (the hope) which is a 52x6.00. The cigar comes in a box of 25. Price point is about $10 each. This cigar is constructed of puro Nicaraguan tobacco that has been aged for 5 years. The wrapper is leather looking and is somewhere in between smooth and toothy. There is a slight oily sheen making it look fresh and not dried out. It is slightly spongy to the touch throughout.

The cigar has a cedar woody flavour on the tongue. It has lots of creamy bluish smoke with a leather aroma. There is a light spice flavour that comes and goes. Nice easy draw. As the cigar warms up about half way through, the spice flavour increases, the leather deepens and a light java flavour becomes present. This is a medium strength and flavoured cigar that burned very evenly from start to finish. Pick one up and give it a try. The minor infraction will carry a $100 fine. The offense can only be cited during a routine stop. So even if a peace officer sees someone smoking in a car and and minor is present, they will not stop you unless there is another offense that warrants a stop, such as speeding. While I am opposed to any smoking bans, I feel that if a law is passed, then it should be enforced no matter what the situation. If it is a law, then it should not be a judgement call on the part of the enforcer. Way to go Arnold you ditz, he is soo stupid that he does not see that each little smoking ban, while it doesn't effect him, just makes it easier to pass more bans on our god given right to smoke. While I have no actual proof that he has in fact gone to the communist afterlife, his absence is quite suspect. The quotes released that are allegedly from him is the only way that the Cuban government can dispell the growing belief that he has infacted passed on. I wear 3 piece suits, bowties, and vintage fedoras on a daily basis. In watching a period movie I saw a gentleman smoking a cigar with a Meerschaum cigar holder.

Back in the day, most women in society would use a cigarette holder so that the tobacco did not stain their gloves. If you have ever seen pictures of Walter O'Malley , owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who was never without a cigar, he always used a white Meerschaum cigar holder.

I wanted to try a cigar holder to see if it enhances the cigar's flavours so I checked on the web and found a few. Once I got them, I grabbed my favourite familiar cigar and lite it up.

The very first noticeable thing is the temperature of the smoke. Because of the added length and porosity of the Meerschaum holder the smoke is noticeably cooler. Also, because there is no physical contact with the cigar wrapper or tobacco, your tongue does not get over exposed with the flavours from contact. The flavours that you taste are ONLY from the nicely cooled smoke.

Cigar holders are also available in Briar. Both the Meerschaum and Briar are similar in construction and design as pipes. And as with pipes there is maintenance that is involved in owning and using cigar holders. They have to be cleaned periodically with pipe cleaners and alcohol to remove build up.

There are draw backs to using cigar holders and one of them is that for the different ring guage cigars that you smoke, you have to own a different size holder for each ring. Another is that inserting the cigar into the holder takes some finesse and patients because you want to get it inserted tight enough to hold it so that it doesn't fall out but not so tight that you tear the wrapper while inserting it. And finally, it is another thing to carry around.

So, give one a try and see if it works for you. Two places that I found online to buy them is www.tobacco-barn.com and www.theladysmokes.com .

Smok'em if you Got'em

Chas

The Bourne Ultimatum

I went to see the new Bourne movie this weekend and it is a roller coaster ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to catch your breath for 2 hours. The changes will be 2 fold, the first being the current rate will be increased and the second being that limited exchanges at the store will be imposed. Currently the plan that the majority of subscribers have is 3 movies at a time with each envelope being a free rental at the retail locations, you know the "never be without a movie" campaign. Well now is seems that in order to "never be without a movie" will cost you extra. So you get 3 movies at a time with a maximum of 3 exchanges at the store, that is a big change...for more money to boot! The optimum humidity level for cigars is 65 to 70 percent relative humidity which mimics the growing environment where the tobacco is produced. But one thing that you need to take into account is that when you remove your cigars from the humidor for consumption they will start to adapt themselves to the ambient humidity level of where you live. So if you live in the eastern United States where the humidity is greater than 70% and your cigars are already at 70% they will absorb the higher humidity level. So when you smoke them they could be too wet. On the western side of the country, where the humidity is less than 70% the cigars will loose humidity and dry out and may be too dry at smoking time. One thing that I have noticed on the discussion boards is that easterners store their cigars at 65% and westerners store their 70%. This makes perfect sense because whether the cigars absorb or loose humidity during their time out in the atmosphere, they won't loose or gain more than 5% in a 24 hour period hence they will be somewhere between 65 and 70% at consumption time.

Chas

Smok'em if you Got'em

Veronica Belmont Leaving cNet.

Veronica Belmont will be leaving cNet's Buzz out Loud to start a new video podcast at Mahalo. The Rh level that you choose to store your cigars at is entirely up to you and will be discussed at another time. The device that you choose is what I will be addressing. When most of you (and me) bought your first humidor, the humidification device that came with it was most likely some green floral foam in a vented container. You charged it with some 50/50 Propylene Glycol/distilled water solution and seasoned your humidor to get the desired level of humidity. This device required you to recharge it every so often depending on many variables such as temperature, humidity of the ambient air and how often you accessed the humidor. These devices release water vapor constantly and can over humidify your cigars very easily especially when your humidor becomes empty. So if you are like me, you look for something that will release humidity only when needed. So after I researched it, I went hi-tech and purchased the "Cigar Oasis" to do the job automatically. The Oasis constantly samples the air and determines when to add humidity to reach the user set level. This is a nice unit but it does have it's drawbacks. The first one is the size of the unit, it takes up the same space as 9 cigars and the vents on the top and the side must not be blocked. The second drawback is that it must be plugged in, so you have to locate your humidor within the close proximity of an electrical outlet. This can really detract from the beauty of a nicely finished humidor to have a cord running from it. So I searched for a device that is as small and simple as a floral foam device but with the accuracy of the Cigar Oasis. In my quest I discovered Rh beads. These special little beads only require distilled water, no PG solution. They not only release humidity based on a predetermined Rh level, but they also absorb excess humidity that can be cause by the change in ambient Rh levels or overly humidified cigars that were added to the humidor. This device is as simple as it gets. Get yours at Cigarmony.com . One other item that you might want to add to you humidor is a wireless hygrometer which allows you to monitor your humidor without having to open it, but that is a topic for another post.

Chas

Smok'em if you Got'em

Oliva Tobacco Angel 100

This is my first time trying the Angel 100. Through the years I have experimented with matches, cedar, butane torches and Zippos. Matches are nice because they have a soft, cool flame which doesn't burn the cigar too fast. You rotate the cigar while slowly drawing the flame into it. The only problem with matches (and cedar) is that if you purge the cigar slightly, the flame will blow out and you will have to light another match which is a pain. Butane torches allow for precise aim and fast lighting but if you are outside (and who isn't these days) it is hard to see the small blue flame and one would have a tendency to over light or cook the cigar. I have always liked using Zippos and for a while, I used the Z-Plus butane insert that converts it to a torch. But these days, I have gone full circle and use a stock Zippo with it's soft, cool flame to light all of my cigars. Unlike the match and lit cedar, if the flame goes out, a quick flick and it re-lights. Some people think that the lighter fluid taints the cigar, but I have never tasted any fluid in my cigars. So, which ever method that you choose to light your cigar, light it even and don't cook it.

Chas

Smok'em if you Got'em

Henry Clay Honduran Hermoso

This is the Robusto size Henry Clay Honduran with a medium brown EMS wrapper. Nicaraguan filler with a Nic/Dom/Hon binder. Easy draw with a uniform ash. Medium earthy flavour. I have smoked several Henry Clay's through out the years and the funny thing is that the cigars that I get in sampler packs are different than the ones that I buy by the box. The box versions are always squished and harsh where as the sampler cigars are nicely shaped and have a smooth taste. I won't buy a box of them for this reason. I like the "good" ones, but I don't always want to buy sampler packs. Rating on the good ones is a 7, boxed version 2.

Chas

Smok'em if you Got'em

Free Tickets for Baseball Fans who get Rectal Exam at Brewers Game

Yes, you read it correctly. It is constructed with an Ecuadorian Sumatran wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and Dom/Hon/Nic filler. The body is medium with a mild earthy flavor. I am enjoying a Cafe Mocha and find that the chocolate brings out the sweetness in the cigar. This is a major value cigar at 65 cents each in a bundle pack. This one is a Robusto (5x50), con shade wrapper with a Dominican filler. It has a smooth creamy taste with hints of vanilla and cedar. It has lots of creamy smoke and it is a cool smoke. Because of the creamyness of this cigar, I chose the Moxie Orange Cream Soda which compliements the flavor perfectly. Draw is always perfect and the quality in construction rivals the best. The beverage that I chose to drink with this cigar is Sioux City Sarsaparilla, which is a strong Root Beer. I got this cigar when I ordered the “Herf in a Box” cigar kit from JR Cigars. It has 20 hand rolled premium cigars for $24.95 in a suitcase shaped box, very cool packaging. The meaning of the name is “Supreme Quality Butter” but this cigar is not sweet or buttery but harsh and strong. This cigar is strong in nicotine and will give you a buzz. Strong straw flavor which is quite bland. Price point is $1.20 to $2.00 ea. Leave this one on the shelf.
